"BEST IN" BULGARIA
DITCHIN
(A THREE TRUNK location because although it looks good, swimming is bit restrictive and there are quite a few flys about.)
LOCATION:
- Adjacent to where the River Rositsa passes the archaeological site known as Gradishte (near the modern village of Ditchin), nearest big town is Veliko Turnova.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Slow and fast flowing water, shade and friendly locals.
HAZARDS:
- Flys rumoured to be mosquitos.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
NICOPOLIS
(A FIVE TRUNK location, worth going to Bulgaria just for this.)
!!! PHOTO AVAILABLE ON REQUEST !!!
LOCATION:
- Adjacent to where the River Rositsa passes the Roman City known as Nicopolis AD Istrum (near the modern village of Nikiup), nearest big town is Veliko Turnova.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Slow and fast flowing water, good "jump-in" spots and excellant sun-bathing grass on bank..
HAZARDS:
- No shade, gets a bit dirty if there has been a storm (just soil- I think), locals bring their horses and clothes to wash here.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
"BEST IN" CAMBODIA
WESTERN BARAY
(A FIVE TRUNK location even better for being hand dug 1000yrs ago)
(Mr Long and Digger in the Western Baray)
This photo is an example of self-photography, CLICK HERE to find out more
LOCATION:
- The "beach" the locals use is at the western end not far from Road 6 (which ultimately goes to Bangkok). We got a moto rickshaw to take us there and the driver, Mr Long, joined me in the water (despite not being able to swim!!!!)
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Small sandy beach with gentle access into the large lake. If that wasn't enough there are cafes, beach huts and you can hire inner tubes. It may look just like any old lake until I tell you "it was constructed 1000 years ago by hand to provide water for the intensive cultivation around Angkor and it is an incredible 8km by 2.2km in size".
HAZARDS:
- Occasional boats and a little bit of pollution but nothing to write home about.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
"BEST IN" CUBA
SALTO DEL CABURNI
(A FIVE TRUNK location despite the long and hot walk to get there)
LOCATION:
- The pool under the Salto del Caburni (near Trinidad) and requires a 2.5km walk from Topes de Collantes
GRID REF:
- No OS and definately no USA coverage.
FEATURES:
- Large pool with strong currents near the actual fall, easy access and wasn't very busy.
HAZARDS:
- No sun-bathing area, but the only real hazard is the 2.5km walk back through the "jungle".
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
LA BATATA
(A FIVE TRUNK location partly based on its unusual and hidden location)
!!! PHOTO AVAILABLE ON REQUEST !!!
LOCATION:
- The Lonely Planet says "La Batata, a large cave containing an underground river, begins at a parking sign just up the hill from Parque La Represa. When you reach another highway, go around the right side of the concrete embankment in front of you and down the hill. Always keep straight or right after this point (avoid trails to the left). Allow an hour each way. Its possible to swim in pools in the cave".
- They forgot to mention that you should turn right at the first "river" you come to or you will walk for hours through uninhabited jungle in the 35 degree heat.
GRID REF:
- No OS and definately no USA coverage.
FEATURES:
- Fabulous "hidden" cave setting
HAZARDS:
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
"BEST IN" CZECH REPUBLIC
TELC
(A FOUR TRUNK location)

FEATURES:
- Surprisingly shallow (and no evidence of fish)
HAZARDS:
- Fortunately I had just got out by the time the police man cycled past.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
"BEST IN" FRANCE
PYRENNES
(A FOUR TRUNK location with a minus 10 due to coldness)
LOCATION:
- Hmm location..... Now you have to remember I was there during the France 98 World Cup and I believe we visited this waterfall around the time of the Argentina game. I think its in the Oueil Valley possibly near Bagneres de Luchon.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Refreshing swim with excellent views
HAZARDS:
- Refreshing = f***king freezing
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
"BEST IN" GAMBIA
BANSANG
(A definate FIVE TRUNK location)
LOCATION:
- Probably at Bansang (30km east of Georgetown) in an area known as the "interior" which for a country only 40km wide is a bit of an exaggeration. Just follow the local boys who look wet.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- The local boys swim here so it must be a delightfull spot to swim (see below)
HAZARDS:
- Try not to worry too much about the very strong current, vultures sat on a tree nearby and the knowledge that hippos & crocodiles live upstream (don't always trust the locals!).
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
"BEST IN" GERMANY
MASCHSEE, HANNOVER
This photo is an example of self-photography, CLICK HERE to find out more
LOCATION:
- The Maschsee is located a mere 500m from the city centre. The "official" swim spot is at the south end of the lake.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- As if practically being in the centre of the city isn't enough some kind sole has put down loads of sand to make a beach. Although they have also build changing rooms, showers, bars and a fence so they can charge you!
HAZARDS:
- The bottom of the lake had a very slimey feel to it. Hopefully its not related to the duck poo which abounds on the adjacent grass.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
"BEST IN" GUATEMALA
LOS VAHOS
(Hot water = FIVE TRUNK swim)
LOCATION:
- Los Vahos (The Vapors) is 3km from Parque Centroamerica near Almolonga.

"BEST IN" HOLLAND
RIVER WAAL, NIJMEGEN
(The setting is a FIVE TRUNK, but watch out for the current, and the big ships!!)
LOCATION:
- Theres sort of a country park type area adjacent to the river to the north of the town. Rather surprisingly you will discover that this means going down a hill (yes thats a hill in Holland!!).
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Sandy beach, lots of horse for company and quite (ok very) strong current in the middle of the river. Oh and an interesting bridge crossing the river. It, or probably its predecessor, was one of those captured during Operation Market Garden during WW2. However, this one was not "the bridge too far".
HAZARDS:
- Lots of excited horses (maybe they don't see river swimming very often), big boats/ships and a crazed Dutchman added to the excitement.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
"BEST IN" MALLORCA
TORRENT DE PAREIS
(The setting is a FIVE TRUNK, but unfortunately the swimming only FOUR)
LOCATION:
- Torrent de Pareis (near Calobra). The rough guide suggest decend from Escorca "which requires rock-climbing skills, wetsuits and ropes"! I'd suggest you follow the partly tunnelled concrete walkway for 5 mins from Sa Calobra.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Nice shingle beach, lots of different pools to choose from, great scenary, and even the option of sea swimming.
HAZARDS:
- None really. Well except for falling rocks and occasional coach partee loads of tourist (just pick a pool more than 10 metres from the concrete path and they will never find you.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
"BEST IN" MEXICO
AGUA AZUL
LOCATION:
- Off the winding mountain road between Ocosingo and Palenque. This fantastic spot is located in the Parque Nacional of the same name.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- The whole area is exceptionally beautiful and there are plenty of less busy places to swim if you walk upstream away from the tourist bit.
HAZARDS:
- Apparently there have been attacks on tourists upsteam (only just read that!), which may explain why there are guards every so often along the path.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
MISOL-HA (MEXICO)
LOCATION:
- Approximately 18km from Palenque and a 1.5km walk from the main road. You can even stay in "some of the most beautiful wooden cabanas in Mexico" according to my guide book. Now why didn't I read that while I was there?
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- A 25m waterfall forms the stunning backdrop to a good pool which is fine for swimming.
HAZARDS:
- The signs warns you not to go into the pool in your clothes or shoes because it is deep! So you have been warned.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
RIO GRIJALVA IN CANON DEL SUMIDERO (MEXICO)
LOCATION:
- This "swim" in in the town of Chiapa de Corzo (I think) where the boats leave for trips up the canyon. Its about 50km from San Cristobal de las Casas.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- What more could you ask for steps leading into the water and adjacent bars/restaurants!
HAZARDS:
- The water was quite fast flowing and I suppose I should mention the crocodiles!
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
"BEST IN" NEPAL
ON ROUTE TO EVEREST BASE CAMP

- Look for a glacial lake in-between the mountains near Dublha.
GRID REF:
- No idea, but somewhere where its cold!

- Easy access, handy "pub" and variable depths of water.
HAZARDS:
- Surprisingly shallow, quite a strong current in middle and I suppose I should mention that this is the elephants bathing area!
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
"BEST IN" SCOTLAND
Scotland is fantastic for "wild" swimming because there is water everywhere and hardly anybody around to try to stop you. Heaven.
ABHAINN THRAIL (NEAR TORRIDON)
This photo is an example of self-photography, CLICK HERE to find out more
LOCATION:
- Park where the A896 crosses this river to the south of Torridon and walk north up the rough track adjacent to the river. The "swim" is on your left just before the only house up the track (a holiday home).
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Excellent views with lovely hills as a backdrop. Also handy if you are staying in the holiday home 10 metres away.
HAZARDS:
- Big pebbles which make walking difficult.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
ABHAINN DHSSEIG (BEN MORE, ISLE OF MULL)
LOCATION:
- There are several small watefalls and pools on the north-west side of Ben More. Park in the allocated parking on the side of the B8073 and follow the Abhainn Dhisseig to find them.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Fantastically clear water and very refreshing after climbing Ben More. Good view over Loch Na Keal.
HAZARDS:
- No real hazards but these pools are far too small for a big swim.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
ALLT CAIRE ROILL (BEN DAMPH, NEAR TORRIDON)

- A bit nippy and some tree trunks underwater.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
ALLT DARAICH (ISLE OF SKYE)

- The Allt Daraich is on of many streams that joins the River Sligachan just before it enters Lock Sligachan. Park near the Sligachan Hotel on the A87 and follow the path up past the narrow gorge where the best pools can be found.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Easy access, perfectly clear water and just about big enough to swim in!!!
HAZARDS:
- Easy to slip on rocks so watch out.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
BEASDALE BURN (NEAR BEASDALE)
!!! PHOTO AVAILABLE ON REQUEST !!!
LOCATION:
- Somewhere between Fort William and Arisaig near the coast. I know you won't believe me but it has its own train station!!! Walk up maybe a km from the A830 and you will find the best pools.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Excellent stretch of fairly isolated warm water close to where it enters the sea. The latter affects the depth, although there are always places deep enough for a proper swim. Very tame birds in the adjacent bushes can be viewed if you are quiet.
HAZARDS:
- Some people might find the water too warm!!!!! We did have a possible sighting of a crocodile, but it turned out to be a tree branch in the water.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
EAS FORS (ISLE OF MULL)
LOCATION:
- On west side of Isle of Mull adjacent to Ulva. Plenty of parking on side of B8073 by the bridge which carries the stream. Walk back to SE for 100m and there is a place in the cliff that you can climb down.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Excellent powerfull waterfall with good view of Ulva from the lower and upper pools.
HAZARDS:
- "Nice and refreshing swim" aka bl**dy cold! Other than the cold the climb down from the road is the biggest hazard!!!
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
FINGALS CAVE (ISLE OF STAFFA)
LOCATION:
- Located on the south-east tip of Staffa. Need boat to get to it. Takes about an hour on the boat from the Sound of Ulva.
GRID REF:

HAZARDS:
- Watch out for tourist boats that tend to go as far into the cave as they can!
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
GLEN COE
LOCATION:
- Park in one of the two main car parks on the south side of the A82. Follow the good path across the river and up to the "Hidden Valley" on the other side of Glen Coe itself. There are several spots with just about enough water in to bath in.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Fantastic clear and refreshing (see below) water, with views across the Glen to Jimmie Savalls house (so I'm told).
HAZARDS:
- For refreshing read bl**dy cold and unfortunately you can't really swim properly to warm up.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
LOCH NAM BAN MORA (ISLE OF EIGG)
LOCATION:
- Located just NW of the Sgurr which is the most prominant hill on Eigg. Most paths from Galmisdale (village where the ferry arrives) lead to the Sgurr.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Fantastic clear and refreshing water, with views to the Sgurr one way and the hills of Rum in the other. Add to that the artificial island created in the Iron Age and what a place for a swim......
HAZARDS:
- In the summer its best not to hang around too long while getting change because of the MIDGES!!!
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
LOCH BA (ISLE OF MULL)
LOCATION:
- On west side of Isle of Mull. Park on side of B8035 just before bridge by Knock Farm. Walk over bridge and take the track that runs to the south of the Loch. I went in in-between a floating fish farm and Rubha Gainmhich.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Fantastic scenery all around you. Good clean and deep water.
HAZARDS:
- Suprising amount of vehicle movement along the track; perhaps they were trying to stop people swim!
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
LOCH NA H-OIDHCHE (near Shieldaig Forest)
LOCATION:
- Rather surprisingly Shieldaig Forest is one of those forests with no trees. Equally surprising its not particulary near Shieldaig!!
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- This is a pretty remote Loch so there will be plenty of room in the water for you!! And you get fantastic views of the mountains all around.
HAZARDS:
- In places it surprisingly shallow
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
LOCH CORUISK (ISLE OF SKYE)
This photo is an example of self-photography, CLICK HERE to find out more
LOCATION:
- The Loch is on the south side of the Cuillin Hills. You can get a boat to it from Elgol or for the purists walk down the valley from Sligachan c. 7miles. There are a few small beaches on the south-east side of the Lock which make for easier access.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- The setting is fabulous with the Cuillin Hills all around you. What more do you want?
HAZARDS:
- None really, although you do have to remember to leave enough time for the walk out (or make sure you are booked on the return boat).
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
LOCH DAMB (NEAR SHIELDAIG)
!!! PHOTO AVAILABLE ON REQUEST !!!
LOCATION:
- Park pretty well anywhere between Shieldaig and Annat on the A896. The easiest walk-in is from Balgy where there is a path part of the way.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Wonderful shingly beaches at the north end which provide easy access and a nice comfortably place to sleep (midges permitting).
HAZARDS:
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
LOCH DUGHAILL (NEAR SHIELDAIG)
!!! PHOTO AVAILABLE ON REQUEST !!!
LOCATION:
- Adjacent to the A896 about 2km south of Shieldaig. Theres plenty of parking between the road and the Loch.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Easy access and one of those "swims" where once you get in you are soon out of your depth so there is not going back!
HAZARDS:
- As stated above it gets deep quite quickly, but I suppose I should mention the cold.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
nr LOCHWINNOCH
(As a "cold plunge" this is a FIVE TRUNK location, but for swimming don't bother)
(The classic River Swimmers pose that lead to quite a trend)
LOCATION:
- Somewhere near Lochwinnoch (maybe 20km south of Glasgow).
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Arrh the photograph that sporned a "world famous" t-shirt and a thousand (ish) imitations.
HAZARDS:
- Now this really should be called the Red River, thankfully not like the famous one in Cornwall caused by metal in the water, but in this case Peat.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
LOCH SHIELDAIG (near Shieldaig)
!!! PHOTO AVAILABLE ON REQUEST !!!
LOCATION:
- On a penisula that separates Loch Shieldaig from Loch Torridon. Simply follow the footpath out of Shieldaig past the school and pick you spot.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Simply beautiful (on the right day!!)
HAZARDS:
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
LOCH TUATH (ISLE OF ULVA)
(OK this is actually a sea lock but itsa FIVE TRUNK location)
This photo is an example of self-photography, CLICK HERE to find out more
LOCATION:
- A sea loch between Ulva and Mull. There are loads of places to swim but I went in near Torr Ardalum on Ulva. Parking is not an issue as you can only get a foot ferry (operated by Donald between 9am and 5pm) to the island.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Lots of little islands to swim round.
HAZARDS:
- Theres a fair bit of seaweed near the shore and you do have to watch out for the odd boat.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
LOCH VOIL (west coast of Scotland)
(A much bigger "cold plunge", but this is definately a FOUR TRUNK location)
!!! PHOTO AVAILABLE ON REQUEST !!!
LOCATION:
- 4.5km west of Balquhidder (yes such a place does exist)
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Easy access, surprisingly "not too cold" for the time of year, excellent views all round.
HAZARDS:
- Watch out for Ghosts (Rob Roys grave is in Balquhidder)
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
UPPER LOCH TORRIDON (west coast of Scotland)
(A definate FIVE TRUNK location)
LOCATION:
- You can access Loch Torridon pretty well from anyway. This spot is near the Falls of Balgy where a river enters the Loch.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Superb view of the (often snow covered) mountains all around the Loch.
HAZARDS:
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
RIVER DAMH (nr Balgy)
!!! PHOTO AVAILABLE ON REQUEST !!!
LOCATION:
- The river flows from Loch Damh into Upper Loch Torridon. Its extremely handy if you are staying in Balgy Lodge because the river is at the bottom of the garden.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Its bl**dy handy if you happen to be staying in Balgy Lodge. Not just that there is a good sized pool just below some shallow waterfalls. Add to that the ability to swim into Loch Torridon and you are in swimmers heaven.
HAZARDS:
- The only real downside is that the pool is in shade in the evening (when this photo was taken!!)
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
RIVER LEALT (ISLE OF SKYE)
LOCATION:
- Park in the layby (really a car park) possibly labelled Inver Tote on the A855 maybe 20km north of Portree. Walk to the view point overlooking the sea and drop down to the sea.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- This is one of those great places where you can swim along a river and into the sea or from the sea and into a river. Infact it was such an excellent day you could look across to the mainland possibly around Torridon (see below).
HAZARDS:
- The sea had a bit of a current so watch out and the river probably gets quite low at low tide.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
RIVER SLIGACHAN (ISLE OF SKYE)
LOCATION:
- Park near the Sligachan Hotel on the A87 and follow the river for 20m and you will find pools.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Its handy for the hotel which does allow walkers/climbers and we now know wild swimmers in, even when the legendary Shamos bar for then next door is shut.
HAZARDS:
- It started to get dark but I think that was more about the time I went in. I'm looking grumpy in the photo because the "support team" are on the Whiskey, even a young child called Ben!!!
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
RIVER SNIZORT (ISLE OF SKYE)
!!! PHOTO AVAILABLE ON REQUEST !!!
LOCATION:
- About 6km west of Portree on the B885. Park where the road crosses the river and head 100m south for this pool, although I'm sure there are others.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- The pool is quite sufficient for a reasonable swim, but to be honest just to be able to say that you have had a swim in a river by the name of Snizort made it all worth while.
HAZARDS:
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
Scout's Pool, Keltie Water (nr Callendar, Stirling)
LOCATION:
- You need to follow the minor road from Callendar (west of Stirling) past to golf course up to the point it is gated. Park on side of road and follow the track over a stream and turn left. Then pick your pool because there are several excellent swims. This one is probably called the Scout's Pool.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Excellent sized pool with relatively easy access.
HAZARDS:
- None really (except the cold)
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
"BEST IN" TANZANIA
NGO DONG RIVER
(A FIVE TRUNK location and even warm water)
LOCATION:
- To the south of Gezaulole village.
GRID REF:
"BEST IN" VIETNAM
NGO DONG RIVER
(A THREE TRUNK location: excellent views but muddy)
(I'm the tiny blob on the right)
LOCATION:
- My swim was in the very touristy bit of the river at Tam Coc. Its about 9km to the SW of Ninh Binh, not too far from Hanoi.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Warm and shallow water, along with breathtaking views.
HAZARDS:
- Due to the warm and shallow water the bottom of the river is very muddy. More worryingly is that Vietnam has Schistosomiasis! Also known as Bilharzia! Its transmitted by minute worms tht enter through your skin and attach themselves to your intestines or bladder. The resulting infection often causes no symptoms until the disease is well established (several months to years after exposure) and damage to internal organs is irreversible. STILL least you had a good swim!
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
PERFUME RIVER
(A FOUR TRUNK location)
LOCATION:
- Perfume River passes through the city of Hue in central Vietnam. I chose a spot for a swim c. 6km to the south near the village of Tuan to the north of the car ferry.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- The bank from the adjacent road is a bit steep, but some kind sole has built concrete steps. Its a bit stoney and gets deep pretty quick.
HAZARDS:
- None really, although I did gain a crowd of school children.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
"BEST IN" WALES
LYNN DINAS (SNOWDONIA)
!!! PHOTO AVAILABLE ON REQUEST !!!
LOCATION:
- Only 2km north-east of Beddgelert along the A498. The road passes along the north side of the lake, but the nicest "swims" are along the south shore.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Along the south shore there is equally good access and in places shingly stones. Gets deep quick which means you are "committed" very soon.
HAZARDS:
- No really, but I was buzzed by a rescue helicopter before it realised it was meant to be retrieving a walker with a broken leg.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
LLYN LLYDAW (Snowdonia)
(Like so many Llyns in Snowdonia this is a FIVE TRUNK location)
LOCATION:
- Llyn Llydaw is the second lake you reach if you are climbing Snowdon from Pen-y-Pass.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- The views what more can I say (oh its got lovely clear water and reasonably flat stones for access).
HAZARDS:
- Some say its cold, but just what do you expect?
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
RHEADR GAFR (Snowdonia)
(A FOUR TRUNK location- if the water nymph featured in Robs Directory of Cool Places had been present it would have scored more)
LOCATION:
- Nant Peris off the A4086 between Caernarfon and Betwys-y-Coed. Follow the track up (I mean up) from the campsite opposite the pub, then keep close to the stream and you can't miss (unless you get too worn out with the climb). Unfortunately there are alot of new fences to contend with on the way up. AS FEATURED IN ROBBS DIRECTORY OF COOL PLACES.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Not too much room for swimming but an excellent "cold plunge", added possibility of seeing the water nymph (Amanda) who apparently has been going to this spot for 35 years.
HAZARDS:
- If you have a heart condition, don't bother with the climb up the side of the valley to the waterfall, its harder than you think. The new fences are a pain in the b*m (literally).
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
LLYN CAU (Snowdonia)
(Yet another of Snowdonia's FIVE TRUNK locations bagged)
!!! PHOTO AVAILABLE ON REQUEST !!!
LOCATION:
- On the Minffordd Path route up Cadair Idris (from the south-west). You can't miss it.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Reasonable beaches for entry and drops off in depth rapidly (so there is no going back). Fantastic views.
HAZARDS:
- When I went in some nutters had carried a rowing boat up the steep path to the Llyn (they didn't even use it to swim in the middle! must be nutters!).
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
LLYN CWELLYN (Snowdonia)
(Yet another of Snowdonia's FIVE TRUNK locations)
!!! PHOTO AVAILABLE ON REQUEST !!!
LOCATION:
- Approx 1km NW of Rhyd Ddu, to west of Snowdon (north west of Beddgelert). Theres a small car park and boat house!
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Fabulous setting and even an island to swim round.
HAZARDS:
- Popular fishing spot (and they don't just stay on shore, they use boats!!)
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
LLYN Y DYWARCHEN (Snowdonia)
(Only a FOUR TRUNK location)
!!! PHOTO AVAILABLE ON REQUEST !!!
LOCATION:
- Approx 1km N of Rhyd Ddu, to west of Snowdon (north west of Beddgelert). I swam on the south shore because we were camping there at a site owned by the nearby (very expensive and unfriendly tourist) pub.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Lovely view with Beddgelert Forest on one side and Snowdon on the other. Easy access and rough grass for sunbathing. The campsite is only 100m from the shore.
HAZARDS:
- Surprisingly in places a bit dirty. Watch out for fishing lines.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
LLYN IDWAL (Snowdonia)
(Lets face it most Llyns in Snowdonia can be awarded FIVE TRUNK swims)
LOCATION:
- Just west of Tryfan. Quickest route is from Pen-y-benglog (0.5km)
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Fantastic views of Tryfan and the Devils Kitchen.
HAZARDS:
- Watch out.... my Brother had his clothes stolen while he was in the water (oh, but he was on his Stag Weekend)
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
DOLGOCH FALLS (Snowdonia)
(Another FIVE TRUNK location)
LOCATION:
- Dolgoch Falls approx 4km from the village of Bryncrug.Well signposted series of waterfalls with FREE parking and no admittance charge (Thankyou Wales).
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- Series of waterfalls, nearly all with some kind of "plunge pool" beneath them. Refreshing.
HAZARDS:
- Access is difficult to many of them and don't bother with the first one you find or you will be "watched from the public gallery". Just follow the path. I think the best one is the last one just before you leave the wood.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
RIVER NEDD (Brecon Beacons)
(Without a doubt a FIVE TRUNK location. Look its got a water jump!)
LOCATION:
- Approx 3km north of Pontneddfrechan (5km from Hirwaun, Ok have you heard of Merthyr Tydfil). Park by the picnic area and follow the River Nedd (?) south for 300m.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:
- What more can you ask for. A river with a pool deep enough for jumping into!
HAZARDS:
- None, but you might die from the excitement.
DATE OF MOST RECENT VISIT:
YSTRADFELLITE (Brecon Beacons)
(There are many waterfalls near Ystradfellite of varying quality. This one was excellent, but only scored THREE TRUNK location because it is the only swimming location where my heart really did let me know it wasn't happy)
LOCATION:
- Park near Ystradfellte and follow the river south. You shouldn't be able to miss the waterfalls.
GRID REF:
FEATURES:

- Excellent spot with tree linked banks.
HAZARDS:
- Fast flowing water and therefore fast flowing rafts/canoes. Also there are loads of places where the water looks inviting but where the bank is too steep/high for an emergency exit.
